Les Misérables (2012)

“Fight. Dream. Hope. Love” — Les Misérables From time to time, I do enjoy a good musical every now and then. Unfortunately, many of the musicals that have been turned into films in the past have not really made much of an impression on me such as this one. Though, I decided to check this film out since I’m a fan of the musical. And let me just say, it did not disappoint. Before I go into the review, I will say — musicals that are turned into films are more for those who enjoy Read more [...]

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

Being I was in the mood for a period piece, I accidentally stumbled upon this one. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about it but also a little curious. So, I decided to check it out — I’m glad I did. Apart from an all-star cast (including Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson), this film had a great storyline depicting the way families rose to power in the Middle Ages. It showed how they would do almost anything to preserve money and power in the family despite the costs. (Note: If Read more [...]

Lawless (2012)

Recently, I had the chance to see this movie. Unfortunately, I missed it when it first came out. Being that I enjoy historical films, I was really looking forward to this one based on a true story. To say the least, it did not disappoint. The focus of this film was really on the main family, the Bondurant brothers, who ran a successful moonshine business during the days of Prohibition. Their business was very local as they serviced the whole community. Like all good things, there were Read more [...]

The Cider House Rules (1999)

“A story about how far we must travel to find the place where we belong.” – The Cider House Rules Recently, I stumbled upon this film based on the book. And, I must say – it made for a very delightful and heartwarming period piece. Being that I’m a history buff and enjoy watching period pieces from time to time, this movie really hit the spot – it had a lot of heart. And, in addition – a lot of famous actors and actresses. So, what exactly is the film about? As the quote above Read more [...]

City of Life and Death (2009)

Recently, I stumbled upon this film based on the Battle of Nanjing and its aftermath (most commonly referred to as “The Rape of Nanking” or the Nanking Massacre during the Second Sino-Japanese War. And, being that I enjoy period pieces from time to time – this film was like no other. To be honest, it’s a very realistic depiction of the sign of the times during that period – it goes to say it’s not one for the faint of heart. There are many scenes throughout the film that are extremely violent Read more [...]

The Help (2011)

“Change begins with a whisper.” -The Help I recently saw this movie based on this book. And, let me tell you – it was definitely worth it. When I first saw the trailer to this film, it really looked like a fun type of movie to watch. But, at the same time – it also looked like a film with an important message. Even more so, it was a period piece which serves a special place in my heart. So, I decided to check it out. I’m glad I did! Before I go on, I just have to give a small warning. Read more [...]

The Last Station (2009)

Recently, I had the opportunity to see this film based on the famous and gifted writer, Leo Tolstoy. For me, this film was a very interesting one to watch. Since I’m a history buff, I do enjoy watching period pieces and history type movies. This one is no exception. Basically, this film tells the story of the last days of Leo Tolstoy (played by Christopher Plummer). At the end of his life, it seems Tolstoy has grown to be a very bitter man – wanting to be away from society and find peace within himself. Read more [...]

Robin Hood (2010)

“Rise and rise again. Until lambs becomes lions.”- Robin Hood Since I have an interest in history, I was looking forward to seeing this film. Going into it, I had a lot of expectations for it. It surprised me. Though, in a good way. As a child, I remember reading the “Robin Hood” storybook. I remembered Robin Hood, the heroic figure, as one who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. In turn, I really thought this movie would be the same – I was mistaken. Instead of focusing on Robin Hood and Read more [...]

Public Enemies

“I’m not here for your money. I’m here for the bank’s money.”- Public Enemies Ok, so I really wanted to see this film when it first came out. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to catch at the theater. So, I had to wait to see it. Now that it’s out on DVD, I finally had a chance to see it. It was definitely worth the wait. Since I enjoy watching gangster movies, I really did enjoy watching this film from beginning to end. Let me just say, it’s not for everyone. There are parts in the film that seem to Read more [...]

There Will Be Blood (2007)

I first found out about this movie while reading this book. While reading the synopsis, it really sounded like something I’d be interested in. (I think I’ve mentioned here before how I enjoy watching movies where I learn about business). This film happens to take place at the beginning of the century, a time where opportunities were plentiful and some of the wealthiest families today made their millions (who are now worth billions). It truly was an exciting time in American history. Basically, this Read more [...]
